- In the year 1970s, Harman accepted a position as deputy secretary of the Department of Commerce under President Carter.
- When Harman took over as CEO in the year 1976, he sold his company to conglomerate Beatrice Foods to avoid a conflict of interest between them.
- Beatrice quickly sold off numerous parts of the company, including the original branch of Harman Kardon, and by the year 1980, only the 60% of the original corporation remained.
- After leaving the administration in year 1978,he founded Harman International Industries and repurchased some firms that he had previously sold to Beatrice.
- The business continued its expansion strategy with a series of acquisitions during the year 1980s, increasing Harman International’s sales from around US$80 million in year 1981 to more than US$200 dollars million by year 1986, and then more than US$500 dollars million by the year 1989.
- Harman International went public in year 1986 through a stock offering on the New York Stock Exchange(NYSE).
- The proceeds from that sale were used to purchase, among other things, Soundcraft, a UK manufacturer of professional mixing boards, in the year 1988, and later Salt Lake City digital electronics maker DOD Electronics Corp.
- By the year 1994, Harman International was selling consumer audio gear under the brands JBL, Harman Kardon, Infinity, and Epicure loudspeakers, as well as professional audio systems under the brands JBL Professional, UREI, Soundcraft, Allen & Heath, dbx, Studer, DOD, Lexicon, AKG, BSS, Orban, Quested, and Turbosound (the latter of which is now owned by Music Group).
- Madrigal Audio Laboratories was purchased in year 2003, and it now contains Highend Mark Levinson and Revel.In July of year 2011, Harman purchased MWM Acoustics.
- Harman moved into lighting in year 2013 with the acquisition of Martin Professional.
- Harman completed the acquisition of AMX LLC in June of year 2014.
